The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS Southwest Zone D, has called on Osun State University, UNIOSUN, to immediately review the reported expulsion of 18 300-Level Theatre Arts students over an alleged examination question leakage.

In a statement dated August 24, 2026 and signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, the student body said it was concerned about what it described as questions surrounding fairness, proportionality and due process in the disciplinary action.

NANS said information made available to it indicated that an examination question was allegedly compromised before the examination took place.

According to the association, the affected examination was later cancelled and a fresh examination conducted.

It further alleged that 18 students were subsequently expelled, while the departmental examination officer, who it said had responsibility for the custody and security of examination materials, received only a warning.

The student body said that, if the account available to it was accurate, the difference in sanctions required further scrutiny.

NANS stressed that it does not support examination malpractice and acknowledged the responsibility of universities to protect the integrity of their examinations.

However, it argued that disciplinary action should establish the individual involvement of every student affected rather than relying on collective punishment.

The association asked the university to determine who first obtained the alleged leaked examination material, who circulated it, who knowingly benefited from it and how the material left official custody.

It also called for an investigation into the conduct of university officials responsible for handling the examination materials.

NANS said expulsion was among the most serious sanctions available to a university and should therefore be based on clear evidence of individual wrongdoing and a disciplinary process that gives affected students an opportunity to defend themselves.

The association consequently asked UNIOSUN management to suspend the reported expulsions pending a fresh investigation.

It also demanded the establishment of what it described as an impartial review panel to examine the entire sequence of events surrounding the alleged question leakage.

NANS maintained that university staff found culpable either directly or through negligence should also face appropriate disciplinary action.

The association expressed concern about the long-term consequences of expulsion for the affected students, noting that they had already spent several years and significant resources pursuing their degrees.

It appealed to the Vice-Chancellor and management of the university to reconsider the matter and said it was available for discussions aimed at protecting both examination integrity and students’ rights to a fair hearing.
