Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer, days after his daughters appealed for urgent medical intervention.

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

The veteran actor’s death was reported on Sunday, August 23, 2026, with multiple Nigerian media outlets confirming the development. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, reportedly announced his death during an emotional social media live session.

Ogogo’s death came only days after his family disclosed that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance.

His daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had separately appealed to Nigerians, medical professionals and well-wishers to help the family secure specialised medical care for their father.

Lima had said the family was seeking medical assistance rather than financial donations, while explaining that her father’s condition had deteriorated significantly.

The family also disclosed that doctors had indicated that chemotherapy could no longer continue because of the advanced stage of the illness.

The disclosure triggered an outpouring of concern from fans, colleagues and other members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, with several Nollywood personalities rallying support and calling for medical intervention.

Ogogo’s death had been prematurely reported on social media several days earlier, but the claim was dismissed by his family.

On August 18, his daughter, Lima, described the report as fake and urged members of the public to stop circulating unverified information about her father’s condition. At the time, the actor was still alive but seriously ill and undergoing a difficult health battle.

The latest reports of his death, however, were subsequently confirmed by his daughter Kira and reported by several Nigerian news organisations on Sunday.

Before his death, Kira had also spoken publicly about the emotional and financial pressures surrounding her father’s illness.

She alleged that some individuals were attempting to profit from the family’s difficult situation by demanding large sums of money while claiming they could provide solutions to the actor’s condition.

Kira described her father as a good and caring parent and said the situation had taken a heavy emotional toll on the family.

Taiwo Hassan was one of the prominent veterans of Yoruba-language Nollywood, with a career spanning several decades.

Popularly known as Ogogo, he established himself as an actor, producer, director and filmmaker and became widely recognised for his performances in Yoruba films.

His death is expected to leave a significant gap in the Yoruba film industry, where he was regarded as one of the experienced figures of his generation.

Ogogo’s passing also adds to a series of losses involving veteran Nigerian entertainers in recent years, prompting renewed conversations about the welfare and healthcare needs of ageing practitioners in the entertainment industry.

As of the time of filing this report, details of his burial and funeral arrangements had not been officially released by the family.

The Nigerian film industry and fans across the country are expected to pay tribute to the veteran actor in the coming days.
