The Academic Staff Union of Universities has begun an indefinite strike at Niger Delta University and Bayelsa Medical University over the alleged failure of the Bayelsa State Government to implement agreements reached with lecturers.

The industrial action followed separate congress meetings held at NDU's Amassoma campus and BMU in Yenagoa, according to Vanguard.

ASUU-NDU Chairperson, Oyinkepreye Lucky Bebeteidoh, said the union's grievances include the non-implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement signed in December 2025, which was expected to take effect in January 2026.

The union is also demanding payment of outstanding arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards.

According to ASUU, 25 months of arrears initially accumulated before the state government paid six months, leaving 19 months outstanding.

The union said lecturers had previously suspended industrial action after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government in February 2025 but alleged that key parts of the agreement remain unimplemented.

The latest action follows a decision by ASUU's National Executive Council earlier in August authorising several university branches, including NDU and BMU, to begin procedures for industrial action over unresolved demands.

The union said the strike would continue until its demands are addressed.

No immediate response from the Bayelsa State Government to the latest strike declaration was found in the reports reviewed by The Verita Post.
