The Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the victory recorded at the just concluded governorship election in Osun state by his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, as a remarkable victory achieved against formidable political opposition.
Davido stated this while speaking with journalists at country home on Tuesday following his victory in the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The singer, while congratulating Governor Adeleke, said the election was a difficult contest in which several prominent political figures allegedly rallied against the incumbent governor.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” he said.
Davido attributed the governor’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, whom he praised for remaining steadfast and protecting their votes throughout the electoral process.
He said the level of support for the Adeleke family during the election was overwhelming, adding that he became emotional several times while witnessing the events of election day.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” the singer said.
Davido further described the victory as a message to political leaders across the country, arguing that leaders who genuinely work for their people would enjoy the people’s support.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
The singer also thanked the people of Osun State for standing by Governor Adeleke and the Adeleke family, despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.
Beyond politics, Davido used the occasion to unveil his plans to deepen his involvement in youth and sports development in Osun State.
As chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he said he had deliberately postponed some of his initiatives until after the governorship election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
According to him, one of the initiatives under consideration is the development of a recreation centre for young people, which would feature football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.
Davido said the proposed facility would provide young people with an avenue to discover, develop and showcase their sporting talents while also promoting healthy recreation.
The development marks a shift from campaign-season support to a broader post-election agenda for the singer, who has remained one of Governor Adeleke’s most vocal celebrity supporters.
Governor Adeleke secured a second term in office after defeating his major challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the August 15 election.
Davido had actively supported his uncle throughout the campaign, frequently using his social media platforms to mobilise support and urge voters to protect their ballots.
With the election concluded, the singer said his attention would now turn to supporting initiatives capable of improving opportunities for young people in the state, particularly through sports and recreation.
