The Osun State Police Command has begun an investigation into a shooting incident in Osogbo after suspected hoodlums obstructed the movement of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s convoy following his visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo’s palace on Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly after Adeleke, accompanied by his nephew and Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, visited the palace after the governor received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission following his re-election.

Initial reports described the incident as an attack on the governor’s convoy. Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, told PUNCH that hoodlums attacked the convoy and were repelled by the governor’s security personnel.

However, a preliminary police account provided a different sequence of events.

Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said a man identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was prevented by the singer’s security team. The confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the convoy before it eventually left safely.

Davido also disputed claims that the confrontation was directed at Adeleke, saying in a post on X that it was a fight outside the palace and had nothing to do with the governor’s convoy.

Police said the suspected gang members later left the area and allegedly shot a 60-year-old man, identified as Tajudeen Yusuf, at Itaolokan in Osogbo. Officers reportedly found him injured and took him to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead.

The command said efforts were underway to identify and arrest those responsible, while urging residents with useful information to assist investigators.

The differing accounts mean it remains unclear whether Governor Adeleke himself was specifically targeted. Police investigations are ongoing.
