The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has formally commenced preparations for the 2027 governorship election, declaring its intention to reclaim the state's Government House.

The party inaugurated the management team of its Governorship Campaign Council in Umuahia on Tuesday.

The council is chaired by former Nigerian Ambassador to Argentina, Amb. Empire Kanu.

Kanu declared that the PDP remained a dominant political force in Abia and described the Labour Party-led administration as a temporary occupant of the Government House.

He said the party had learnt lessons from its defeat in the 2023 governorship election and would work to avoid a repeat of the mistakes that contributed to its loss.

The PDP's early mobilisation signals the beginning of an increasingly competitive political season in Abia as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.

The party will have to rebuild its structures, mobilise supporters and develop a campaign strategy capable of challenging the incumbent administration.

The 2027 contest is expected to attract significant attention as political parties attempt to consolidate their positions ahead of the general elections.
