The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a public debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Adebayo made the challenge in Abuja while unveiling the SDP's 2027–2031 policy document, titled “Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity.”

The SDP candidate said four years would be sufficient for a determined government to make significant changes in Nigeria.

He made the eradication of insecurity one of the central promises of his proposed administration, saying his government would take decisive action against terrorism and other forms of criminality.

Adebayo also criticised what he described as poor leadership and argued that Nigeria's major challenges could be addressed through competent governance and policies that encourage production and economic development.

His manifesto places poverty reduction, security, human development, economic productivity and infrastructure among the key priorities of the SDP's proposed administration.

The challenge to Tinubu comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

With the ruling APC already beginning mobilisation in states such as Lagos and opposition parties unveiling their policy positions, the debate over competing political programmes is expected to become more prominent as the election approaches.
