In an emotional tribute released on Wednesday, Messi recalled how his father had continually encouraged him to participate in the tournament, even as his health deteriorated just days before the competition began. For the first time in his career, Jorge was not able to be present at a major tournament to support his son.

Messi explained that his mother had reassured him that his father would eventually recover and travel to join them. Throughout the tournament, the Argentina captain aimed to reach the final so his father could watch him play. After every match, however, he waited in vain for a message from his father, making the reality of the situation increasingly difficult to bear.

Although Argentina reached the final, Jorge never made the trip. Messi admitted that physical exhaustion ultimately took a toll on him as he pursued a championship victory dedicated to his father. Reflecting on the campaign, Messi wrote that despite falling short of the trophy, the team enjoyed every match together.

The 39-year-old forward stated that the loss has left him questioning his future in football, admitting that he does not know how to proceed without his father, who also served as his representative and adviser throughout his career.
