Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on Wednesday. The victory solidifies PSG's position as Europe's top team, adding to the title they won last year against Tottenham Hotspur.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the 20th minute with a powerful shot. Aston Villa responded with a debut goal from teenager Brian Madjo just before halftime, who equalized in the 45th minute after being set up by John McGinn.

The decisive goal came in the 61st minute from PSG's Desire Doue. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after VAR review confirmed Matty Cash had played Doue onside. Aston Villa had chances to equalize, including an effort from George Hemmings and a late opportunity for Tammy Abraham, but PSG's defence held firm.

The match saw both teams field strong lineups ahead of their domestic seasons. PSG's starting eleven included nine players who won the Champions League, while Aston Villa rested several World Cup participants but handed debuts to midfielder Joao Gomes and striker Madjo. Boubacar Kamara also made his first start since January after recovering from a knee injury.

The UEFA Super Cup, contested between the Champions League and Europa League winners, was officiated by Somalian referee Omar Artan.
