The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly frozen an Osun State Government bank account just 10 days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for 15 August 2026.

According to documents cited by multiple media outlets, the account, domiciled with First Bank and said to be used for the payment of workers’ salaries, has been placed on a “Post No Debit” restriction. This status prevents withdrawals and other debit transactions from the account.

The development came barely 24 hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the accounts of the Osun State Government and some top officials. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor described the alleged plan as politically motivated and aimed at disrupting government operations ahead of the election.

Adeleke maintained that the EFCC lacks the constitutional and statutory authority to freeze the accounts of a state government, insisting there was no legal basis for such action.

A source close to the governor later confirmed that the account had indeed been restricted, stating that the matter was no longer an allegation and that the governor would address the press on the situation.

As of the time of this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement explaining the reason for the restriction or responding to the governor’s claims.

The timing of the action, coming so close to the off-cycle governorship election, has generated political reactions and raised questions about its potential impact on state operations and the electoral process.
