The National Human Rights Commission has demanded the immediate suspension and arrest of Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, for allegedly inciting his supporters to commit violence ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

In a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, the Commission referenced a viral video in which the lawmaker allegedly directed supporters to attack members of the Accord Party. According to the NHRC, the statements captured in the footage amounted to incitement to murder, electoral violence, and voter intimidation.

The statement read in part: "From now on, whenever you see Accord members, kill them. I authorise you to kill them. They have wives and children too. This is a Federal Government election. On election day, even if they come with voter cards, we won’t allow them to vote."

The Commission urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to immediately arrest, investigate, and prosecute the federal lawmaker. It also called on the leadership of the National Assembly to suspend him from all Senate duties pending the conclusion of police investigations.

The NHRC stated that prevention remains the duty of the state and warned that public officers who issue directives threatening citizens' lives should not remain in office. It added that a situation room has been established to document incidents and urged Osun residents to remain peaceful and report security threats.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has written petitions to the United States government and the British High Commission, requesting a visa ban for Senator Fadahunsi and his family members.

Adeyanju stated that the petition aims to address impunity among politicians whose actions undermine the democratic process, while also calling for the consideration of asset seizures and the foreclosure of business interests for individuals who subvert the rule of law in Nigeria.
